In a letter from his new home in the budding village of DeKalb in 1837, David M. Chisholm noted the prospect of having "one of the finest neighborhoods on the Red River." Today, DeKalb, Texas is a charming community with a spirit that makes it feel like home for both young and old. Newcomers are welcomed with friendliness and soon find themselves a part of the community and as dedicated as lifetime citizens.

DeKalb has received worldwide recognition as the birthplace and final resting place of Dan Blocker, Hoss Cartright on the long running television series Bonanza. It also boasts of having been the home of Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter, King of the twelve string guitar players and writer of "Goodnight Irene" and "Cotton Fields Back Home", Durwood Merrill, American League Umpire, and Luke Walker, pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates.
